Many new to cables discover that in fact cables aren't that big mysterious stitch! With practice and using the right tools, one can be proficient at them in no time!
  • Cable needle: I have found using a thin metal hook sometimes difficult for beginners since the hook falls through the stitches, get poked...not fun knitting! I recommend to my students to use a wooden double point needle about the same size as their knitting needle. The stitches are tighter on the needle, wood usually holds the yarn from slipping off the needle. See picture.
  • Ladders: Loose stitches from cables are called ladders- this is caused by not tightening up the stitches after knitting them and crossing them. Good habit is to give your yarn a little tug before doing another stitch after a crossover or cable sequence.
  • Needles: When doing intricate stitches such as cables or lace, the point of your needle can deter you from neat work or help. A sharper pointed needle, helps slide in between several stitches and the needle. Prevents splitting the stitch and speeds up your knitting.
